Vaughan is one of five schools in the United States to be recognized with the 2009 High Flying Schools Award sponsored by The National youth-At-Risk Conference in collaboration with The National Network for Educational Renewal. Selection for this award is based upong the school's standings in the following five areas: high achievement, high poverty, diversity of the study body, community collaboration, citizenship development, and democratic education. The award was presented on March 2, 2009 at the National Youth-At-Risk Conference in Savanah, Georgia. Elizabeth Vaughan is honored with the 2009 Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award.
This award is given to schools who have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and made significant progress toward Governor Kaine's goal for increased student achievement and expanded education opportunity. This award announcement was made on January 15, 2009.
Vaughan receives a Gold Award from the USDA
USDA established the Healthier US School Challenge as a way to recognize schools that are creating healthy school environments by promoting good nutrition and physical activity. Schools have the opportunity to become certified as Bronze, Silver or Gold Schools, depending on meeting certain criteria. Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary School has earned the School of Excellence Award for the third time.
Title 1 Distinguished School
Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary was recognized as a Title 1 Distinguished School by the Virginia Board of Education for raising the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students. The award is based on student achievement on state assessments during 2007-08 and the previous school year, meeting NCLB benchmarks in reading and math and having average tests scores in both subjects at the 60th percentile or higher. Vaughan is one of 124 schools in the state, one of two in Prince William County, to receive this recognition. The award announcement was made April 30, 2009.
